School Lager: Where Theory Meets Practice

Brewing students competing for their own star among Czech lagers

The education of future brewers and maltsters begins with theory – in school, students learn how beer is created from the perspective of chemistry, biology, technology, and production economics. During professional training, they acquire essential work habits and gain confidence in handling tools, raw materials, and processes.

The highlight of connecting theory with practice is working on a school brewery. Here, students can for the first time experience the complete brewing process and jointly refine a recipe for Czech lager that becomes characteristic of their school, class, or region. Each lager thus carries not only knowledge but also the personal imprint of its creators and the place it comes from.

The “School Lager” category in the Czech Brew Star competition gives students the opportunity to present their beer to a professional jury and to the public. It’s not just about medals – participation provides invaluable experience:

  • teamwork and shared responsibility,
  • the first real confrontation with professional evaluation,
  • the chance to defend their beer before a panel of experts,
  • and motivation to continue their career in brewing.

The competition takes school education one step further. It gives students the chance to show that their knowledge is not just from textbooks but that they can brew a beer capable of competing with professional breweries.
